  abstract = {Typed decision models (TDMs) return a probability for each allowed answer instead of generating text, which makes them candidates for cheaply replacing LLM judges that compare two answers. Whether they share the biases of LLM judges is untested. We run the CALM benchmark's bias tests on eight TDMs and seven LLM judges of 2024 and 2026. Every TDM is biased, in three to eight of twelve tests. Emotional tone affects them most, and rewriting the better answer in such a tone lowers the accuracy of a typical TDM from 99% to 42%. TDMs are more biased than 2026 LLM judges. All eight change verdicts when the answers swap places, which the 2026 LLM judges hardly do, and several side with an answer that most people allegedly prefer or that a famous model allegedly wrote. Yet both kinds of judge are tripped up by the same prompts. The TDMs' probabilities show that most tests mainly flip verdicts the TDM was unsure of, and that good calibration does not protect against bias. As TDMs are more consistent and 37 times cheaper than 2026 LLM judges, our results suggest they can be attractive judges if their biases are tested for the task.},

  The second edition of Implicit Motives provides a thoroughly updated and extended overview of current theory and research on motivational processes and dispositions. Implicit motives represent nonconsciously operating, affect-based enduring needs to seek particular classes of incentives (e.g., influence, mastery, closeness) and avoid corresponding classes of disincentives (e.g., powerlessness, failure, isolation). Implicit Motives follows the intellectual tradition of David McClelland and John Atkinson in its emphasis on thematic apperceptive measurement of motivational needs. It features some updated chapters and many new ones, reflecting the exciting and diverse new developments in motive research since the first edition was published in 2010. It aims to provide an authoritative, international reference work that will offer researchers and advanced students a comprehensive and balanced overview of current scholarship across the expanding field of implicit motive research. Like the first edition, the volume features overview chapters of motivational dispositions for achievement, power, and affiliation; the current perspective on their measurement; reviews of their neuropsychological, cognitive, and behavioral aspects; and portrayals of motives in applied contexts. It also features a new section on the theoretical underpinnings of motivational processes that examines implicit motives from the perspectives of incentive motivation, Pavlovian learning, and research design and offers new chapters on, among others, sexual motivation, autonomy motivation, motives and emotion, life-long development, and AI-based motive assessment. Written by internationally renowned scholars of motivation, the second edition of Implicit Motives will serve as an authoritative reference work for researchers, students, and others interested in this topic.

As linear birefringence is a measure of anisotropy in the structure of a glass or a polymer, stress induced in glasses or polymers can be measured by stress birefringence. Interestingly, this effect can also be found in 3D-printed materials, such as fused filament fabrication (FFF)- or stereolithography (SLA)-printed objects, for some materials or material blends. Here, we report birefringence measurements on 3D-printed translucent objects, performed using a microscope with crossed polarizers as well as large-scale crossed polarizers, and show visual differences between macroscopic and microscopic effects.},

@article{7185,
  abstract = { Digital Educational Escape Rooms (DEERs) represent a compelling form of game-based learning that situates collaborative problem-solving at its core. Grounded in constructivist and collaborative learning principles, DEERs require teams to negotiate meaning, coordinate actions, and apply prior knowledge under time pressure, conditions that promote deeper cognitive engagement and knowledge consolidation. The game environment provides intrinsic motivation through narrative immersion and immediate feedback, while cooperative mechanics cultivate communication and shared responsibility. Systematic reviews confirm that DEERs foster teamwork, communication, and critical thinking, yet adoption remains limited because creating pedagogically sound DEERs demands both instructional design expertise and substantial technical skill. Existing authoring tools either sacrifice expressiveness for usability or require programming knowledge, leaving a significant gap for non-technical educators seeking to design rich, interactive learning experiences aligned with curricular goals. This work in progress paper presents the DEER-Wizard, a low-code authoring approach that guides educators through a multi-step configuration covering puzzle structure, narrative flow, and learning objectives. Each step is grounded in established DEER design principles, including narrative framing, interdependent puzzles, adaptive hint strategies, and structured debriefing, ensuring that pedagogical alignment is built into the authoring process rather than treated as an afterthought. A connected DEER-Generator converts the completed configuration into a playable game. The Wizard builds on the DEER-Toolkit embedded in a 2D multiplayer dungeon crawler with cooperative play and xAPI-based learning analytics that support formative assessment. Together, Wizard and Toolkit enable non-technical educators to design pedagogically aligned DEERs without programming expertise, directly addressing the power-usability dilemma identified in authoring tool research. The DEER-Wizard is a conceptual design with a prototype implementation in progress. A planned mixed-methods evaluation will examine usability for educators and learning outcomes for students in authentic higher education settings. The Wizard, the Toolkit, and the generated Escape Room Games are and will continue to be released as open-source software and open educational resources.

  abstract = { Online customers’ journeys span several touchpoints, which typically do not involve any interpersonal interactions with online retailers—except at the moment of delivery (MoD). When retailers use third-party courier services to fulfill orders, they relinquish control over this critical, last-mile touchpoint, possibly to their detriment. An analysis of over 35,000 reviews shows that a negative MoD experience can trigger ripple effects through detrimental word of mouth (WOM). To regain control, retailers might adopt vertical integration or inoculation. Across four experimental studies, the current research examines how courier type (proprietary vs. third-party) affects consumers’ WOM in response to positive and negative MoD experiences and how inoculation messages can reduce customers’ susceptibility to adverse effects of negative MoD experiences. A single-paper meta-analysis affirms that third-party couriers buffer the detrimental effects of negative MoD experiences, but positive MoD experiences benefit only established retailers handling last-mile delivery themselves. Inoculation messages can also increase customer resilience to last-mile failures by mitigating the adverse effects of negative MoD experiences on WOM. This research highlights couriers’ crucial role as key actors in the MoD and clarifies the effects of MoD experiences for online retailers, emphasizing the need to consider both couriers and preemptive measures.
