Reasons for Leave of Absence and Required Proof

A leave of absence is only possible in a few exceptional cases.
Reasons not listed here, such as financial emergencies or employment, are not grounds for leave of absence.

Illness

Regular studies (attending courses and taking examinations) are not possible due to the illness.

Required proof:
Medical certificate in which a leave of absence is recommended for the entire semester, as the illness prevents the student from attending courses and delivering the expected study performance.

Caregiving duties

Caregiving duties for a spouse, registered partner or a direct relative or first-degree relative by marriage.

Required proof:
Written justification and medical certificate, in which the student is designated as the caregiver.

Pregnancy

Giving birth during the semester for which the request is made.

Required proof:
Maternity log or medical certificate (with expected date of birth).

Parenting duties

Parenting duties for a child living in your household.

Required proof:
Birth certificate and certificate of residency for you and the respective child (available from the local registration office).

Study stay abroad

Studies at a university abroad during the semester for which the request is made.

Required proof:
Enrolment certificate of the university abroad.

Voluntary internship in Germany or abroad

Completing a voluntary internship that is not prescribed in the examination regulations during the ongoing semester.

Required proof:
Certificate from the faculty that the internship serves the study objectives.

Other reasons

Important reasons that make it impossible to study in the semester for which the request is made.

This does not include economic or financial reasons, employment or preparation for the final thesis!
