We care about our employees. That is why we support them with benefits that improve their (professional) life. Flexible working hours, childcare, health management or continuing education offers: learn everything you need to know about your benefits at HSBI.
Depending on the position, you will be paid a state salary for civil servants (e.g. W-Besoldung) or according to the Collective Agreement of the German Federal States (TV-L). In addition, we offer a pension scheme and capital-forming benefits.
Bielefeld, Gütersloh, Minden: HSBI’s three locations reflect our university’s diversity. Look forward to living in a region that has a strong economy and whose diverse and green character contribute to a high quality of living.
You can leave your car at home – all our locations can be reached by public transport. In addition, university employees have the opportunity to subscribe to a reduced-price ticket for regional public transport, which is transferable to other users.
Please find more information on this offer on the moBiel website.
We want you to be able to balance your work with your individual needs and duties. That is why we support mobile work outside the university.
People’s life circumstances are highly individual. As a family-friendly university, we thus offer you the opportunity to work flexible hours. Part-time work, too, is an option.
As part of HSBI, you will gain not only regional but also global perspectives for your career: We support and fund international Staff Mobilities such as language courses, conferences, guest lectureships or job shadowing within the framework of Erasmus+. This is ideal for developing further your (intercultural) competencies and networks.
International meetings are part of our daily routine: Events at all of our university locations such as the International Week connect people, ideas and impulses from all over the world.
We support you in your work with a professional translation service into English – from proofreading to specialist linguistic advice.
Our network of more than 160 partner universities worldwide opens up new opportunities for your international collaborations in teaching and research.
As an international applicant, our Welcome Center will support you so that you can settle in well in Germany and at HSBI.
The International Office will be happy to advise you on your international options: www.hsbi.de/en/international-office.
Your health is important to us. That is why we offer many different health management services and occupational safety and health protection measures. HSBI employees can participate in (virtual and on-site) courses offered by the University Sports Service at Bielefeld University for free or for a small fee. We also conduct regular vaccination programmes, such as flu vaccinations, or a variety of health courses. We will also be happy to advise you on how to configure your workspace.
HSBI has been certified as a family-friendly university since 2011. It is important to us to support our employees and students who are parents in their everyday life. We thus offer many different services that help you balance work and family duties.
Day-care centre for HSBI employees’ children
Our day-care centre for children of HSBI employees and students, Kita EffHa, was established in 1994. Kita EffHa accommodates a total of 30 children aged between four months and six years in two groups. The Uni-Kita and Kita am Voltmannshof, too, give priority to children of Bielefeld University’s and HSBI’s students and employees. In Minden, we cooperate with a municipal day-care centre that is located close to the campus.
Holiday programmes for schoolchildren
In the Easter and autumn school holidays, and if necessary in the Christmas school holidays, HSBI offers free childcare for children of students and employees aged six to twelve years at Bielefeld Campus and on Minden Campus. Kita EffHa also regularly offers a holiday programme in the summer holidays. On Minden Campus, employees can use the holiday programme offered by the Anne Frank creativity centre for children and youth in the Easter and autumn school holidays.
Do you have work-related appointments in the evening or on the weekend and you need someone to look after your child(ren)? In coordination with the manager of the day-care centre, Kita EffHa offers childcare for children aged between four and ten years Mon–Fri between 4.30 p.m. and 8 p.m., Sat between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. and Sun by agreement.
At our campuses in Bielefeld and Minden, there are several rooms in which parents can nurse and change their babies or spend time with their children. In the parenting room in HSBI’s main building on Bielefeld Campus, toys, books and a kitchenette are available, too.
Around three quarters of all people who require care receive it at home. We thus provide special advisory services for HSBI employees with caregiving duties. The external care provider Amiravita advises you on all questions regarding care degrees and requests, care techniques and benefits and services provided by the care insurance free of charge – by telephone, e-mail or in person.
Would you like to work outside the university, too? You can have a secondary employment, e.g. in the private sector, of up to eight hours per week.
Would you like to take a break from work for some time? You can use our sabbatical leave programme “Break2Grow” for this. It consists of two phases: a saving-up phase and a phase of leave. You will agree upon the average working hours resulting from the combination of the two phases in advance. During the entire period, you will receive the salary resulting from this. It is important, however, to clarify in advance how your tasks can be allocated to others during your leave.
Where do I want to go? That is a question that many early-career researchers ask themselves. Your supervisor will thus regularly invite you to review and outlook conversations to talk about your individual career planning options.
Writing block during your doctoral studies? Need to catch up on digital teaching? Whatever it is that you need: Continuing education and training opportunities are a given at HSBI. Talk to your supervisor about which offers might be helpful for you.
Would you like to prepare an application for external funds or apply for a patent? Do you need help with open-access publication? We will be happy to support you with our services around research and transfer.
Internal research funding
Would you like to realise a special research project? HSBI provides funding for research projects of newly appointed professors and research projects with a focus on female or gender-specific issues every year.
Research advice
The F.I.TT. team will provide support in the development, submission and implementation of third-party applications and research projects.

Our publication funding supports you in publishing your research in open-access journals. On request, HSBI assumes the article processing charges.
