Academic Staff

Would you like to stay at the university after your studies? Are you planning to do a doctorate or would you like to gain some research experience? Here is where you will find information on opportunities for academic staff at HSBI.

What do academic staff do?

Academic staff have completed their university studies (some including a doctorate) and are employed at universities of applied sciences (UAS), universities or research institutes.

Depending on the position’s profile and on the faculty, your tasks as an academic staff member may vary. They often include the following areas:

  • You conduct your own research projects or belong to a research group.
  • You support in teaching, for example, by preparing lectures, seminars, exercises and practical courses.
  • You continue on your own path of academic qualification by working on your doctoral thesis.
  • You assume administrative tasks in your faculty, such as website maintenance, or you support course planning.
  • As part of academic self-government, you participate in bodies such as examination committees, appointment procedures or the Staff Council.

Which qualifications should academic staff bring?

We look forward to applications from prospective employees who have a keen interest in academic work and research and intend to further develop their skills. You should be able to organise yourself well – especially if you intend to write a doctoral thesis at the same time. As a formal requirement for becoming a member of our academic staff, you must bring a completed university degree (e.g., bachelor’s or master’s degree, Diplom degree, Staatsexamen or Magister).

Depending on the position, further subject-specific qualifications may be required. Would you like to have a look at our current job advertisements?

What do academic staff members earn?

Depending on the position and individual qualifications, academic staff members at HSBI are in salary groups E10 to E13 according to the Collective Agreement of the German Federal States (TV-L). If you work in academic staff for several years, you will progress to higher experience levels within your salary group and your salary will increase accordingly. You can view the salary overviews on Finanzverwaltung NRW’s website.

Do academic staff usually also work on their doctorate?

Although this is frequently the case, it is not a must. However, this path often comes naturally, as academic staff are integrated into research projects and contribute to them, which means that they receive deep insight into a topic. Many of our researchers use this opportunity to develop questions for their doctoral theses.

Which career paths are there?

The career paths of our academic staff are diverse: Many decide to stay at a university as Postdocs after their doctorate and to keep pursuing an academic career. For them, our Career@BI project is interesting, too, as it qualifies early-career researchers to become eligible as professors at universities of applied sciences through tandem positions.

As an alternative to a career in academia, a career in industry may be attractive, too. Academic staff have usually reached a high level of expertise in their field and they bring valuable soft skills such as self-organisation, team skills and perseverance.

What does the application process look like?

Applications can simply be submitted online through our application management portal. You will find the link at the bottom of the respective job advertisement. We look forward to getting to know you!
