Countryside or big city life? We have both! On our campuses in Bielefeld, Minden and Gütersloh, we show that diversity is our USP. Learn more about our study locations and what makes our green but urban region East Westphalia-Lippe (OWL) so special.
We are a university of applied sciences and arts – our teaching staff, students and researchers are thus in continuous exchange with their environment. With practitioners, scholars, entrepreneurs, artists and many other stakeholders in society. This is one of the reasons why we benefit from our three campuses in three very different cities.
With its approximately 330,000 inhabitants, Bielefeld is our largest campus. High above the city in the Teutoburg Forest sits its landmark, the Sparrenberg castle. While Bielefeld was long known as a centre of the linen industry, today its economy consists of global corporations, medium-sized enterprises and innovative business start-ups.
The western district of Bielefeld with its cafés, shops and the bi-weekly market on the Siegfriedplatz square (“Siggi”) is popular among students and families alike.

HSBI’s main building on Bielefeld Campus, completed in 2015, is located to the west of the city centre, too. Its distinguishing feature is its special façade, which pays homage to brainwaves in an ECG - very fitting if you think about the activities happening inside the building, where students and scholars from many different countries learn and conduct research together in the faculties Engineering and Mathematics, Social Sciences and Bielefeld School of Business and Health.

Twelve study programmes, more than 1,600 students and a campus that is listed as a historic monument: these are the characteristics of our location in Minden, where we offer the full-time programmes Architecture, Civil Engineering, Project Management Construction, Computer Science and several practice-integrated engineering degree programs. The former artillery barracks houses seminar rooms, lecture halls and laboratories. The ensemble of old buildings is complemented by a new construction with a canteen, office spaces and a light-filled library.
With more than 80,000 inhabitants and situated by the river Weser, Minden is a city that offers a high quality of life and a strong economic environment. Its urban landscape is characterised by historic buildings in the timber-frame “Weser-Renaissance” style. Minden is also known for the waterway crossing formed by the Mittelland canal and the Weser, the Weser cycle route and Minden Cathedral. Whether you prefer water sports or shopping strolls: Minden has a lot to offer apart from studies and research.

One of the smallest of Germany’s major cities is HSBI’s youngest location: Founded in 2010, Gütersloh Campus offers a variety of pioneering bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes, both work-integrated and part-time. Together with renowned collaboration partners, researchers, teaching staff and students at the Center for Applied Data Science on Gütersloh Campus examine the opportunities and challenges of digitalisation.
Gütersloh has around 100,000 inhabitants, and in addition to multinational companies such as Bertelsmann and Miele, its assets include a lively cultural landscape and numerous recreational areas, which just like the city itself can easily be explored by bike.
East Westphalia-Lippe (OWL) is a creative and innovative region marked by strong research and powerful medium-sized businesses. The companies and organisations are diverse and include large multinational as well as traditional, owner-operated companies and tech start-ups.
Brands such as Dr. Oetker, Hörmann, Miele and Von Bodelschwinghsche Stiftungen Bethel are known all over Germany and beyond. There are also a lot of industrial companies and service providers that are global market leaders in their niches.
Thanks to practical projects with regional companies, collaborations and continuous exchange, we have a great network in the region. Our students, researchers and teaching staff actively contribute to the dynamic change processes in the region, as the transfer of ideas, knowledge and technology is one of the university’s core tasks in addition to research and teaching.
