When should I start looking for accommodation?

Please start looking as early as possible, ideally 2–3 months before arrival.

Does the International Office offer any support?

Yes, the International Office provides information and tips on finding accommodation as well as contacts of student residences.

Does the International Office have its own flats?

No, we do not own any accommodations. We have partners that reserve a limited number of rooms for us to offer to students, but we are also happy to help you find accommodation on the housing market.

How do I find accommodation in the city?

Use the information provided by our Housing Support and online platforms.

Can I get a room in a student residence?

Yes, but places are limited. Please apply to the Student Services Association (Studierendenwerk) as soon as possible and register for the waiting list.

How much does a room approximately cost in the city?

Depending on the location and type of accommodation, e.g. shared flat, hall of residence: usually 300–500 euros, bedsit: 400–600 euros.

What does cold and warm rent mean?

Cold rent: rent for the flat only. Warm rent: including utilities such as water, heating and bin collection.

I can't find a flat – what should I do?

Please contact the Housing Support: international.students@hsbi.de. We can also help with temporary solutions and tips for short-term accommodation.

What documents do I need to apply for a flat?

In most cases, you will need a passport, your admissions letter and, if applicable, a rental guarantee.

What is a rental confirmation letter?

The rental confirmation letter is a form that you receive from your landlord. It is required for your residency registration.

Are there shared flats or housing offers specifically for international students?

No, there are no housing offers specifically for international students.
