The Career@BI Project: Your Path to Becoming a Professor at a University of Applied Sciences

A job in which you share and enhance your own knowledge. A job that leaves a lot of room for your research interests. A job that you can balance with your family duties and preferences. Does that sound like a dream job? Well, it is! You can have all that if you work as a professor at a university of applied sciences.

With our Career@BI project, we intend to offer more academics and practitioners the opportunity to choose this career – especially those who do not fulfil the criteria for an appointment (yet). Learn more about the project and your individual prospects now.

What is Career@BI?

As part of the “FH Personal” programme funded by the Federal State and Länder, HSBI has established the Career@BI project to offer targeted support to experts who would like to work as professors at a university of applied sciences. Participants are supported in the areas in which they require it – for example, teaching, research or professional practice. In addition, mentors will accompany them on their way. In up to three years, you will gain valuable experience and become eligible for appointment as a professor. You will then be able to apply for professorships at universities of applied sciences Germany-wide. The project is embedded in the CareTech OWL research network, which collaborates with various partner companies.

How does the Career@BI project work?

Have you already thought about becoming a professor at a university of applied sciences? Then you know about the many opportunities that professors have – and also about the requirements that candidates must fulfil. Many of those who are interested in the career path are deterred by these requirements. If you apply for a professorship at a university of applied sciences, you should bring:

  • Completed university studies
  • A doctorate (or proof of special suitability, depending on the subject)
  • Five years of work experience (three of which outside the university)
  • Teaching experience (or suitability as a teacher, as we call it)

Perhaps you, too, are interested in becoming a professor at a university of applied sciences and already fulfil some of the criteria – but not all of them. This is where Career@BI comes in: with tandem positions and part-time lectureships.

Tandem position: gain work experience outside the university

Have you completed your doctorate and are you working as a postdoc at a university or university of applied sciences now? In this case, a tandem position might be interesting for you. In this position, you will work in equal shares as a lecturer for special assignments at HSBI and as an employee in a partner company. You can thus enhance your academic knowledge with valuable practical skills. Would you like to learn more?

Part-time lectureship: enhance your teaching and research experience

Have you gained at least three years of work experience outside the university after your doctorate (or in exceptional cases, after your university degree)? Would you like to impart your knowledge to students and enhance it academically – but you do not have any experience in that area? Becoming a part-time lecturer might be the perfect option for you. In this position, you will spend 25 to 50 percent of your working hours teaching and doing research at HSBI and the rest in your current job. Is that something you can picture yourself doing?

Who can apply for Career@BI?

We look forward to applications from post-doctoral researchers and postdocs who work in business, industry, social care or health care. If you are uncertain whether your profile matches the project, please do not hesitate to contact us. You will find the different ways to contact us at the bottom of this page. We look forward to getting to know you!

Who pays Career@BI participants’ salaries?

Of course, you will receive a salary for your work during your time in the project. The salary is paid as follows:

  • Tandem position: You spend 50 percent of your working hours in a company and the other 50 percent at HSBI. The company will bear 25 percent of the cost and HSBI 75 percent.
  • Part-time lectureship: As a lecturer for special assignments, you teach and conduct research at HSBI and receive a salary. In addition, you will receive a salary from your current employer according to the working hours you assume there.

Your application for Career@BI

Would you like to become a part of our project? We look forward to your application! These are the documents we require you to submit:

  • A motivational letter including your ideas on the teaching area in which you would like to become a professor,
  • A sketch of ideas for your research activities
  • Your CV and certificates
  • For tandem positions: ideally, ideas for a transfer project and suitable cooperation partners
