Your Benefits as a Professor at HSBI

Continuing education, networking, funding: At HSBI, we provide many forms of support for professors – always tailored to your needs. In addition, we offer a number of further benefits, e. g., research funding for newly appointed professors, didactic training, sabbatical leave and our own day-care centre. Teaching support

hdw nrw university didactic training institute

Whether newly appointed or in the job for years: we want our professors to be able to expand and update their knowledge. For this purpose, the hdw nrw network offers seminars, workshops, coaching sessions, working groups for subject-specific teaching and certificates for teaching staff at the 20 universities of applied sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The range of topics is diverse and includes university teaching for newly appointed professors, scrum theory, voice training and innovative concepts for digital teaching. We encourage our professors to take part in hdw nrw’s offers on a regular basis. In addition, newly appointed professors receive extra time for didactic training through a reduced teaching load. Instead of 18 weekly hours per semester, they are expected to teach 14 weekly hours per semester.

Hybrid teaching

As far as possible, your courses should take place in the classroom. However, if you would you like to teach a share of your courses online, we support you with many helpful services. In general, you will be able to do a share of your work at HSBI from home (by agreement), so that you can balance your personal and professional responsibilities in the best possible way.

Research support

Internal research funding for newly appointed professors

Would you like to realise a special research project? HSBI provides funding for research projects of newly appointed professors every year, provided that their appointment was no more than four years ago at the end of the year in which the application is made. Research projects with a focus on female and gender-specific issues receive special funding, too. Funds are allocated based on the criteria of women’s and gender research.

Research advice

We will provide support in the development, submission and implementation of third-party applications and research projects. Just get in touch with our contact persons of the F.I.TT. team!

Research sabbatical

Would you like to dedicate yourself to a research project? Let’s make that possible! By individual agreement, you will be able to fully concentrate on your project for six months during your research sabbatical. Important: Before the start of your research sabbatical, you must have been working at HSBI for four years and you need to clarify who will stand in for you. Usually, you will continue to receive your salary during your research sabbatical.

Publication funding

Our publication funding supports you in publishing your research in open-access journals. On request, HSBI assumes the article processing charges (APCs).

Assistance with patents and intellectual property

Ideas need support! That is why we collaborate with PROvendis GmbH, NRW’s patent exploitation agency, for patent research and applications and for the commercialisation of university patents.

Transfer and collaboration

Maintaining a close network of representatives from research, industry and society is a central component of our mission statement. In particular, we have strong long-term ties with companies and institutions in East Westphalia-Lippe thanks to our work-integrated programmes and the transfer of ideas, knowledge and technology with regional companies. These are connections which you will also be able to use for your own projects.

Interdisciplinary cooperation

What do care and technology have in common? A whole lot! At HSBI, we live and breathe interdisciplinary cooperation within our six faculties. A broad range of university-wide projects demonstrate the networked way in which our professors work.

Salary, support and work-life balance

Salary of professors at universities of applied sciences

Professors who are civil servants are paid according to the salary group W. Most professorships at HSBI are advertised as W2 professorships. The basic monthly salary in the Land North Rhine-Westphalia is €7,051.97 (as of February 2025). Depending on your individual situation, additional benefits, such as family allowances or capital-forming benefits, come on top. Salaried professors will be remunerated corresponding to the W2 salary group.

Secondary employment

Would you like to work outside the university and realise your own projects, too? We will also support you in these cases. You can have a secondary employment, e.g., in industry, of up to eight hours per week

Sabbatical leave: Break2Grow

Would you like to take a break from work for some time? Our Break2Grow programme’s sabbatical leave consists of two phases: a saving-up phase and a phase of leave. You will agree upon the average working hours resulting from the combination of the two phases in advance. During the entire period, you will receive the salary resulting from this. It is important, however, to clarify with your supervisor in advance how your tasks can be allocated to others during your leave.

Childcare and other services

We are a certified family-friendly university and offer our employees many support services such as our own day-care centre, childcare services in the evenings and rooms for nursing, baby changing or parenting.
