The importance of Networking in Academia

Dr. Katja Simons | online

Networking is something we all know we should be doing (more). The most effective networking is done regularly over time not just when you need help with something. Ideally, networking is a give-and-take: collaborative and reciprocal. We will discuss the many benefits of networking with people inside your institution, outside as well as abroad. We will explore different ways and platforms for networking and how it will support your (academic) career. The session will include a presentation to stimulate the discussion and an exchange of ideas in break out rooms.

Workshop and individual coaching "Writing abstracts, proposals and other short texts faster"

Dr. Vera Leberecht | online

In the academic world, well-written abstracts and proposals play an important role in convincing journal editors, conference organisers, or supervisors to accept a paper for review, to invite a researcher to present at a conference, or to supervise a PhD project. However, in the hectic of day-to-day work, we often lack the time and energy to sit down and get such shorter texts written. In this mini workshop, we first focus on what constitutes a good abstract/proposal, and then apply a hands-on strategy to write short academic texts faster. Afterwards, you may discuss your draft and receive feedback in an individual coaching session with the trainer. The workshop day consists of a 2.5-hour mini-workshop, followed by individual coachings. Participants can attend the workshop session and an individual coaching, or just sign up for one of the two. In an individual coaching session, you can ask questions about all kinds of questions related to academic writing, whether you have already written several papers in English, or are just starting your PhD.

Scientific Presentation - Getting it Right!

John Kluempers Ph.D. | presence | HSBI HHG (room tbd)

Giving presentations is not only a way to get your research out to peers. It’s a way to network so that researchers (potential future colleagues or employers) can put a face to the academic work.
A good presentation begins with good preparation. Participants work on exercises that help them understand the best techniques in developing the right presentation by answering questions like: Who will be present? Where will I give my talk? How can I most effectively present my research material? What determines success?
Beyond that, the doctoral candidates learn how body language can help them and strengthen their presentations, both in stressing their arguments and in authentically revealing their personalities.
In this one-day seminar, they develop a solid foundation of effective strategies so that they can systematically prepare sound talks, improve their presentation skills, and prepare better slide shows. The participants will recognize their strengths and know how they can correct and improve critical parts of their presentations.

Registration will be open soon.
