Career@BI: Part-Time Lectureship

Have you gained more than three years of work experience in business, industry, social care or health care after your doctorate? Can you picture yourself as a professor, teaching and doing research at a university of applied sciences – but you do not have the required experience yet? Becoming a part-time lecturer might be the perfect option for you to become eligible for appointment as a professor. This will allow you to gain teaching and research experience at HSBI while continuing to pursue your professional responsibilities at the same time.

What is the Career@BI project?

With the Career@BI project, HSBI qualifies candidates for professorship at a university of applied sciences in collaboration with the research network CareTech OWL. Within three years, candidates have the opportunity to catch up on teaching and research experience (part-time lectureship) or industry experience (tandem position).

How does a part-time lectureship work?

As a part-time lecturer, you will gain valuable teaching experience at a university of applied sciences.

  • At the university, you will have a teaching load of two to four weekly hours per semester as a lecturer for special assignments. In addition, you will have responsibilities in research management and the university’s self-government.
  • You will be able to continue working with your previous employer (if necessary, with reduced working hours).

Feedback from participants of the programme

Dr. Havva Mazı, Lecturer for Special Assignments at the Faculty of Social Sciences

“The support provided by Career@BI is a unique opportunity for me to enhance my academic career. I have been a practitioner for 28 years, working as a health educator and a nurse. Now I teach at HSBI, accompany graduates during their year of practical training and supervise theses. Career@BI enables me to teach and conduct research together with other academics and to build an international network. In the meantime, I have developed a study of my own and will soon start conducting it.”

Dr. Hilmar Schadrack, Lecturer for Special Assignments at the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematics and Cyber Defence Consultant

“In my area of expertise, we are always on the lookout for bright minds. With my courses at HSBI, I make a direct contribution to enabling students to enter the important field of IT security. I enjoy teaching and am currently developing a portfolio of courses I will conduct at HSBI. The teaching experience I gain at the university is also valuable for my job in the industry – for example, for workshops that I conduct with clients.”
