Career@BI: Tandem Position

Are you currently working as a postdoc and can you picture yourself becoming a professor at a university of applied sciences? Do you still need the required work experience outside the university to become eligible for being appointed as a professor? In this case, a tandem position might be the right thing for you. You will gain valuable experience in a partner company – and thus take the next step towards professorship at a university of applied sciences.

What is the Career@BI project?

With the Career@BI project, HSBI qualifies candidates for professorship at a university of applied sciences in collaboration with the research network CareTech OWL. Within a maximum of three years, candidates have the opportunity to catch up on teaching and research experience (part-time lectureship) or industry experience (tandem position).

How does a tandem position work?

With a tandem position, you can gain practical work experience outside the university. You will work in equal shares as a lecturer for special assignments at HSBI and as an employee in one of our partner companies for up to three years.

  • At HSBI, you will have a teaching load of four to six weekly hours per semester.
  • In your partner company, you will be responsible of a transfer project in which you can combine your research experience with a practical approach. In addition, you will have further responsibilities in the company. You can either select a company from among our cooperation partners or approach a company of your own choice..

What benefits do companies have from a tandem position?

Companies benefit from the researchers working with them as part of the Career@BI project in many different ways.

  • Highly qualified employees: The postdocs bring excellent skills and knowledge in their respective field of research.
  • Beneficial link between theory and practice: The transfer projects, in particular, generate synergies for university and company.
  • Shaping research and innovation: Companies expand their competence areas through a close link to the university.

Experience of a programme participant

Dr. Christian Marschner, health economist and postdoc at Bielefeld School of Business

“The tandem position is an interesting opportunity, as it makes it possible for me to connect different fields of responsibility and activity. This is particularly true for the transfer project I conduct together with Katholische Hospitalvereinigung Ostwestfalen gGmbH. It aims to establish the first mobile geriatric rehabilitation unit in North Rhine-Westphalia. I look forward to helping this new form of health care provision start.”
