Building our own Design School

This two‑day workshop explores the potential ecological and social value of art and design education, and asks how creative learning in all its forms can become more open, more collective and more connected to the world around us. Together, we’ll experiment with what a design school could be when it opens itself up – beyond institutional walls, across ages and backgrounds, and into the public spaces where knowledge is already being made and exchanged. Through collaborative tools, playful experimentation and real‑world testing, we’ll imagine and build our own DIY design school, one that reflects the futures we want to learn our way into.

Ella Britton leads the MA Design for Social Innovation and Sustainable Futures at London College of Communication, where she cultivates a community of creative practitioners exploring design as a cultural, ethical and political practice. Her work champions participatory methods, ecologies of care and imaginative action. She is also developing practice‑based research on the relationship between Primary School art education and Higher Education. – She has previously been a research resident at the V&A, investigating how design strategy can shape the future of cultural and educational institutions. During this time she founded the Collective Design School, experimenting with new models of collectivism in both formal and informal learning.
