In recent years, many European health-care systems have expanded community-based services in order to provide more needs-based, accessible health care while also addressing health disparities and social inequalities. In Italy, citizens and communities must be involved in primary health care organisations such as community health centres. This lecture is based on a research study and begins with an overview of the Italian health care system. Following that, examples of community participation approaches in health in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy are provided. Finally, the challenges and enabling elements for developing and implementing such participatory initiatives will be discussed.
