Information on Deregistration

Have you passed your last exam, are you planning to transfer to another university or would you like to give up your studies? How does the request process work? Can the semester contribution be refunded? What support is available to you after you have left the university? Please find further information on deregistration below.

In general, you can deregister at the end of the semester or on any given date during the semester for which you last re-registered in proper form. However, retroactive deregistration is not possible, as otherwise you could have wrongly made use of student benefits in the time between the desired deregistration date and the actual request.
As part of this deregistration process, you must return your student ID card (or your CampusCard) to the Registrar’s and Examination Office, as you will lose your student status on the date of deregistration and will thus no longer be allowed to use this proof (which would also constitute a criminal offence). You are obliged to provide truthful information about the deregistration and the associated change in your status in the current semester to other authorities (e.g. BAföG Office, Child Benefits Office). In addition, you will no longer be entitled to use the semester ticket!
Despite the deregistration, study semesters and university semesters continue to count for the current semester, which is relevant, for example, when enrolling at another university.

Request process

Please submit your request for deregistration in the CAT portal.

Required proof

In general, the online request for deregistration is sufficient.

If you want to leave HSBI to study at another university, please submit a certificate of enrolment from the new university together with your request for deregistration.

As soon as your request for deregistration has been processed, you will receive feedback through the CAT portal in any case. If your request is approved, new certificates (deregistration and pension certificates) will be generated, which you can also retrieve in the portal. We will not send the certificates by post or e-mail in parallel.

Reimbursement of semester contributions

If you deregister during the ongoing semester before the start of lectures, you will get reimbursed for the semester contribution if you have not taken any examinations for this semester until then. After that, a reimbursement of semester contributions is no longer possible. However, you will then be able to remain enrolled until the end of the respective semester so that you can continue to use the student ID card and semester ticket. In addition, there will be no interruptions if you decide to transfer to another university and your student health insurance will remain valid.

If you transfer to another university (for proof, see above) your semester contribution will be reimbursed within six weeks of the start of the semester (1 March/1 September) upon request.

Your semester contribution can be reimbursed if you have already re-registered for the following semester and request deregistration at the end of the ongoing semester.

You can request a reimbursement for your semester contribution online through the CAT portal.

More information
  • Before you request your deregistration, you should make sure that you have returned all borrowed books, devices, media, keys and other items. You must not have any liabilities towards HSBI’s institutions.
  • If you change study programmes internally at HSBI, you are not required to deregister; however, you must submit the admission for the desired study programme.
  • Deregistration does not affect any examination registrations, i.e. if you have registered for examinations, you must cancel these registrations through LSF separately.
  • Please note: Since student records are destroyed after a retention period of 30 years, student and pension certificates can no longer be issued after this period has expired.
