Admission requirements

For the Bachelor's degree programme International Studies in Management (ISM) you need:

  • School education: Abitur, Fachhochschulreife or an equivalent school leaving certificate or educational background that qualifies you for higher education.
  • Language requirements: at least five school years of English and basic knowledge of French or Spanish (at least two school years). As a rule, proof of your language skills can be provided by the school leaving certificate.
  • Applicants with foreign educational qualifications are required to submit a recognised German language certificate at C1 level along with their application. Please find further information on the application process in the respective section at the International Office.
Programme objectives

The bachelor’s degree programme ISM prepares you specifically for an international career. You acquire sound knowledge of business administration with a focus on the global market and learn to apply scientific methods to real problems in a work-related way. From the second semester onwards, courses will be held in English only.

A special element of the study programme is a one-year studies at one of our international partner universities. There, you will be able to extend your knowledge taking on a fresh perspective and also broaden your intercultural skills, language skills and global network – in so doing you are ideally prepared for work in international companies and organisations.

At the same time, you will acquire skills in teamwork, communication, project management and presentation. Small learning groups and a personal supervision by the Academic Programme Director and teachers provide for individual support and close supervision during the entire study programme. In addition, you benefit from our close cooperation with internationally operating companies from the region, which provides you with valuable practical insights and contacts for your future career

Course of study

The first two semesters will be completed at HSBI. During this time, you will study the principles of business administration as well as English and French or Spanish. Additional language courses can be taken externally. In the third and fourth semesters, a year abroad at a foreign university (preferably a partner university of HSBI) will ensue, which you must complete at one stretch. In principle, studies at our partner universities are free of charge. Courses are coordinated with the partner universities and integrated into the study programme. In the fifth semester, you will return to HSBI. In the sixth semester, you will complete a three-month practical project. This should be done abroad again or have an international focus. After that, you will write your thesis. Please note: In the first semester, lectures will be held in German. From the beginning of the second semester, courses at HSBI will be taught in English.

Study content
  • Semesters 1 + 2: During this time, you will study the principles of business administration at HSBI as well as English and French or Spanish.
  • Semesters 3 + 4: One year of studies at one of our partner universities abroad. The programmes are closely coordinated and fully integrated into the study programme. At our partner universities you study tuition-free.
  • Semester 5: You return to HSBI and specialise your knowledge.
  • Semester 6: Three-month work term – ideally abroad or with an international focus – and the bachelor thesis.
    Alternatively, the work term can be completed directly after studying abroad.

From the beginning of the second semester, courses at HSBI will be taught in English.

Thanks to your one year of studies abroad and intensive foreign language training, you have sound knowledge of business administration and also excellent language skills. Complemented by your intercultural experience and the ability to work confidently in international teams, you have the ideal qualifications for a career in the global economy.

Double-degree option

During your studies, you have the opportunity to obtain a degree of a foreign partner university in addition to your degree from HSBI. This will broaden your professional profile, strengthen your international competitiveness and increase your opportunities on the global labour market.
